The Design
A Workbook Cover That
Makes Kids Want to Study
Makes Kids Want to Study
The brief was clear: design a Grade 3 NYS Math State Exam practice workbook cover that
speaks to two audiences simultaneously — the parent who buys it, and the child who uses it.
The design had to communicate academic rigor without triggering anxiety,
and make learning feel like something worth showing up for.
The foundation of the design is a deep royal blue — authoritative, structured, and trustworthy.
Against this backdrop, a cheerful illustrated brain character takes center stage:
arms raised, pencil in hand, sneakers on. It is the embodiment of the student who is ready.
Not intimidated by the exam — excited for it. The character does something rare in educational design:
it makes effort look cool.
The typography does the heavy lifting on credibility.
"A Ton of Practice" — bold, forward-leaning, kinetic — signals volume and confidence.
The yellow "MATH State Exam" lockup below it anchors the academic purpose.
The NYS Next Generation Learning Standards badge top-left adds the institutional seal of approval
that reassures parents, while the Grade 3 sticky-note tag in the corner adds a touch of
classroom familiarity that makes the book feel personal, not mass-produced.
The result is a cover that earns trust at a glance and earns attention at a shelf.
It doesn't look like every other test prep book — and that is exactly the point.
